California Condor

With a wing span stretching nearly 10 feet the California Condor is the largest American bird. Plus they can live as long as 60 years.

In 1987 the condor became extinct in the wild and the last 8 individuals were taken into captivity. As of May 2012 there were 405 known birds, 226 in the wild and 179 in captivity. Still on the critically endangered list.
