Older than the pyramids of Egypt by 7000 years and Stonehenge by 6000 years, Gobekli Tepe in Turkey rewrote history. Built 11,500 years ago at the end of the last ice age Gobekli Tepe even predates predate villages, pottery, domesticated animals, and agriculture.

Discovered by a Kurdish Shepard in 1994. Excavations began in 1995 headed by German archeologist Klaus Schmidt. His investigations concluded that the site was an ancient religious site or sanctuary. A view now widely supported by many scholars.
